NDIS Counselling
What is NDIS Counselling?
NDIS counselling is a form of talking therapy that’s available as part of NDIS provision, and many people find that talking therapy plays a key role in enabling them to meet their NDIS plan goals. Counselling is a carefully structured conversation that is designed to enable participants to explore issues that are of concern to them and discover a helpful way of dealing with these.
During counselling, participants have a respectful, safe space in which to discuss a wide range of topics. The counsellors delivering this service are trained, certified professionals who are experts in their fields.

What topics can I talk about?
Participants in counselling can talk about a wide range of topics – typically a counselling session will be used to discuss topics of concern to the participant. There are usually very few topics that are taboo during a counselling session and the contents of a session are confidential unless a client discloses they intend to harm themselves or others.
Some of the topics that are frequently discussed as part of a counselling session are detailed below:
- Grief/bereavement/loss
- Anxieties around work or finances
- Difficulties with personal relationships
- Abuse
- Body image
- Disability
- Eating disorders
- Motivation and mood issues
- Insomnia
- Self-harm
The topics under discussion are usually agreed upon at the beginning of the session to ensure focused work is completed. With the right counsellor, many clients can expect to see positive outcomes from their counselling experience in just a few sessions.
How can I access NDIS counselling?
For counselling to be funded through NDIS, you will need “Improved Daily Living” identified as a goal in your plan. This is an adaptable, versatile pot of money that can be used on a wide range of well-being services, including counselling. NDIS clients can choose to allocate some or all of their “Improved Daily Living” funds to counselling or receive counselling as part of a wider package of services.
